GY!BE is a music collective from Montreal, Canada who are on tour supporting the release of their second album since their reformation after a long hiatus. Their shows are truly something to behold. Coming on stage and opening with 10 minutes of droning guitar, and not speaking a word during their 2 hour set, they tend to prefer to play on a stage lit only by ambient light and the glow of the film strips they have projected on a constant loop behind them. This minimalist live show, combined with their powerful instrumental music makes their live show quite an experience.
It is quite an experience to photograph as well. With nothing but ambient light, and ever changing light from the film strip, even my 2.8 lenses at ISO 6400 were coming out dark. Luckily, I just received a manual focus 50mm 1.2, and ended up using that for most of the show. It is hard enough nailing focus at 1.2 in bright light, especia...
