The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart flew against prevailing mentalities and believed passionately in the capacity of women to be as fearless as men in chasing their dreams and making their own way in the world.
She was an author, lecturer, poet, and airline industry vice-president, and by turning her hobby into a career, she flouted the conventions of the day that dictated certain appropriate roles and behaviour that women should follow.
