And despite the fact that the modern Disney versions differ wildly from the original stories and are perhaps too saccharine for some, I’m with Audrey. I still love them. They are cautionary tales with a happy ending mostly as @neilhimself wrote in Coraline, “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” Little Red Riding Hood was one of my favourites when I was growing up - she seemed a pretty brave, strong girl to take on a creepy trip through the woods and a wolf. One of my daughter’s favourites is Mr Wolf’s Pancakes by Jan Fearnley. I love how it turns the old tale of the wolf being a baddie on its head and the ending is pure joy.
