How come some days go so slowly and others just whizz past? And have you noticed as you've grown older that time seems to be passing by even quicker these days? Birthdays seem to come around too fast. I feel like I've only just had my 50th and in two weeks' it's my birthday again.
In his book “Making Time”, Steve Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Leeds Beckett University suggests this is down to some 'basic laws’. One of these is that time speeds up as we get older; another is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed to new environments or experiences. So basically, the more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass. His suggestion is that as we’ve aged we have become desensitised to experiences. We no longer fully take them in and we’re therefore glazing over the time these things take whereas children are fully immersed at any given time in the moment and in what they're doing. It's all new to them and so fills their attention more.
