One of the most recognisable symptoms of menopause. The Hot Flush or Flash (depending on which side of the pond you’re on). The hypothalamus is the little critter to thank for this. It acts like your body’s own thermostat, regulating temperature with help from your hormones. You see where I’m going with this don’t you? So when oestrogen levels decline, the hypothalamus can’t function in the same way that it used to hence the sudden spikes in temperature and voila, a hot flush. Certain clothing, stress levels, alcohol and caffeine can add to the likelihood of hot flushes. But what are you going to do? Stop living? Sit naked in a cold room and only drink water? There’s no one answer to controlling hot flushes but there are various supplements and therapies that have been known to help. And of course there’s HRT too.
