Rhode Island. The original soccer colony. Back in 1886, textile workers in the area began organizing some of the first clubs in America, and it all culminated in Pawtucket, RI, hosting the inaugural US Open Cup Final in 1914. Now, over a century later, the state got to host a game just as important. The return of soccer to Rhode Island. Finally. Fans have waited decades for a pro club of that magnitude, and the past five years since the USL announcement have been torture. A waiting game that ended yesterday at Beirne Stadium — just 15 minutes away from the old ground that held that final all those years ago. Scarves swayed and voices carried, echoing into the past and reaching towards the future of what soccer can be in the Ocean State. The last-minute equalizer was just a taste of what’s to come. All those in attendance felt it. The beautiful game is finally back in Rhode Island.
