“Happiness is our natural state.” - Anthony De Mello, Awareness

How many of you would beg to differ?

Here’s my breakdown... I think we’re all born in happiness, it’s inside of us. As we grow and understand the concepts of desire, greed, ambition, cravings - we learn how to be upset when we don’t have something. And so that happiness disappears behind those longings; those illusions that we need more than what we have.
•
Getting back to happiness requires you to put down those longings... Take a look at yourself and realize that the more you give into society telling you that “you need ______ to be ______”, the more you’ll desire it and trigger unhappy feelings. Nothing will be enough.
•
But as I said, we’re all inherently happy. And we can find that happiness again if we understand that we, ourselves are all that we need. “I am enough for me.” Drop the other bullshit - those needs are pushed on you by society. You have yourself and that’s all that’s required for true happiness.
