Test yourself. Continually. Test yourself at things you are good at currently. Test yourself at things you once were good at. And test yourself at things you aren’t or may not think you’re good at. That’s every photographer’s first steps. Our first photos are trash, but that doesn’t mean we stop. You didn’t stop trying to ride a bike after that first crash, heck no!

As adults I think we lose that gumption. I think we hesitate to try new things or hesitate to try to do hard things. I think adulthood instills some sort of reserve in us that we didn’t have as a child. When we were younger we felt the freedom; we didn’t have anything to lose by crashing our bike a few times until we figured out the whole balance thing. So what changes? Children have humility. They don’t care how many fails it takes until they get something right. Adults care. It’s our biggest self-sabotage.
