“I met Lucia when I traveled to our project in Uganda last year. I’ll never forget interviewing her—in an alley on two flimsy chairs.
A woman in pain and at peace. That’s how she described herself. At just 36, she was a widow, mother of six, and South Sudanese refugee. She worked part-time at a salon to feed her family—the best she could do given her status.
When I told her how strong she was, she responded: ‘Me? Strong? I am not strong. God is.’ For some time after Lucia arrived in Uganda, she had no home, no job, and no means to buy food. She questioned whether she wanted to live—until a pastor introduced her to God’s Word.
‘Now, when I feel weak or want to give up, I wait,’ she told me. ‘I tell myself that God must have a plan for me. That He will make me strong again.’
