As part of 4th grade/s social studies focused on Colorado history and geography, the class learned about the arrival of the Spanish in North America and then Colorado. They then explored how those Spanish explorers affected the people who already lived in Colorado, and eventually led to the foundations of the Hispanic culture and community that have built our state. Students discussed the sorts of statues and monuments that exist in our public spaces, and how to educate the public and honor the Hispanic people and organizations that have enriched our states. They chose a topic that interested them, including such leaders as Federico Pena, Corky Gonzales, the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC), and contemporary artists such as Carlos Fresquez.
