In honor of their use in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" I have 2 KPM gems for you today. "Funky Fanfare" by the great Keith Mansfield from the 1968 “Flamboyant Themes Volume II” (KPM 1038). Aside from “Heavy Action” (aka the Monday Night Football theme) and “The Big One” (aka the People’s Court theme), this is perhaps the best known track in the KPM catalog. There’s a small ensemble version with the same title on 1969’s "Beat Incidental" - KPM 1043 but this is the one with the bombast and moxy. You may recognize it as sampled in MF Doom/Dangermouse’s “Old School” but most know it as the music from the "Our Feature Presentation" card from movies of the 1970s-80s.
When you heard this incredible melody, it meant to STFU and get your butt in your seat – your movie is about to begin. It’s one of the few pieces of music (library and beyond) that immediately elicits a Pavlovian response -- the excitement and anticipation of moviegoing.
