I thought for a minute, under the bright lights in the produce aisle, then shrugged. “Well. I’m on my own.” I closed my eyes and reached for the squash. My hands, guided by a long line of Haitian ancestors, and grabbed two. Soup joumou means something to all Haitians, in some fashion. Even amidst July 4 fireworks and celebrations of freedom, my thoughts traveled easily to Haiti’s independence, won on January 1, 1804 and which my family, like so many others, commemorate with a hearty bowl of soup joumou at the beginning of the year.
