Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the day in 1865 where Union troops arrives in Galveston, Texas informing enslaved Black people in the Confederate South of their freedom. It is worth emphasizing that the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted in 1863, however, not all were free. It took two years for that news to reach those in the Confederate South who were still enslaved. Though Juneteenth is a commemoration, it is also a day recognizing the fight for racial equity and justice is far from over.
