The singing you hear is actually coming from a male which was hovering somewhere below this mother and her calf 🐋 Typically, each mother and calf have a male escort that tags along and runs interference between them and any potential threats or other male whales. The escort stays in the background or several meters below and oftentimes you don’t even realize it’s there until it comes up for air. During our time in Tonga we were fortunate enough to see a wide range of mothers and calves, male escorts, singing males and even a 15 whale heat run! The entire experience was surreal. The more we learn about these incredible animals the more we realize how special they are.
