📷 + 💭: detroithives Did you know that #honeybees work to regulate the temperature of their hive all year long? On this cold day below 31F, we used our thermal camera to spot where our bees clustered. When temperatures drop below 55F, worker bees will form what's called a Winter Cluster. They will cling together and create friction using their flight muscles, (dorsal longitudinal and the dorsoventral) to generate heat up to 95F. Within the northern region, a minimum of 35,000 - 40,000 worker #bees are needed to survive the cold winter months. This cluster (formed of all female bees) will navigate through the hive to eat honey, which is their stored food. Pictured is one of our ten hives, managed at the East Warren Apiary.
