There are only two B-24 bombers in the world that remain “in situ” or where they crashed over 75 years ago during World War II, and this is one of them. One of the most ghostly remains we encountered while on a scientific wildlife expedition in the Aleutian Islands, this particular bomber ends on a positive note. Located on Atka Island, deep in the heart of the Aleutian Islands, the pilots had only a narrow corridor to safely land the plane, a flat stretch of land between two mountain peaks on an island completely surrounded by a freezing sea. Somehow they managed to do it, putting this relic of war down where it remains today. Everyone survived. Learn more about the Aleutian Islands in #TheLastUnknown, streaming now on #discoveryplus.
