Perhaps one of the most visually striking islands I have ever photographed, Bogoslof is an actively erupting volcanic island, which was first depicted on a Russian map in 1772. We’re only seeing the tip of the volcano, where there is the most activity, with the remaining volcano submerged in the surrounding southern Bering Sea. We worked closely with the Alaska Volcano Observatory team to ensure a safe landing on the island, and once there, we were able to observe one of the largest northern fur seal congregations in the world with as many as 140,000 individuals on the island. I later learned that a week or so after we left, the volcano erupted, and the small “lake” in the foreground had disappeared as the island was reshaped by the geologic process.
