The Elusive Mountain Hare standing tall on a cold afternoon in the Peak District, England.
During the short days of winter, their coats turn white to help them camouflage in the snow, only the tips of their ears remain black. They sit for hours on end in freezing blizzards. Whilst many other Arctic animals don't turn white, it is believed white fur has more insulating properties due to the lack of melanin, leaving more air to keep them warm. Increasingly warmer Winters however, means less snow and leaves them visible and vulnerable to prey. The last number recorded for the England population was just 2400.
