Another Wattage Wednesday, keeping the energy flowing bright 💡
The MMR is a small modular nuclear reactor designed by Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation. It is in the licensing process in Canada and the U.S., and is categorized as a 4th generation system, using ceramic micro-encapsulated fuel known as TRISO particles encased in silicon carbide. This fuel is promoted as providing inherent safety through extremely high temperature stability.
The MMR has a relatively low electrical power output range of 3.5-15 MWe per unit (power for 5,000-15,000 people.) However, multiple MMR modules can be combined to scale up the power capacity. The low power density and high surface area to volume ratio are design features intended to allow passive heat dissipation without requiring active cooling systems.
The compact MMR units have a small footprint and are marketed as viable for off-grid deployments in remote areas or harsh environments, not requiring water resources or connection to an electrical g...
