ThorCon is made up of 2-250 MWe power modules. It’s a molten salt fission reactor with liquid fuel that can be pumped and passively drained. It's based on proven technology from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. ThorCon aims to produce clean, reliable, and inexpensive electricity at 3 cents per kilowatt-hour, cheaper than coal. Its modular design allows for rapid deployment, with a single reactor yard capable of producing 20 gigawatts of power plants annually. ThorCon is also composed of a passive shutdown and cooling systems, multiple barriers between fuel and the atmosphere, and chemically-bound hazardous fission products contained within the reactor system.
As of 2024, no reactor of this type has been built. A prototype called ThorConIsle is predicted to be started in Indonesia by 2029.
