Recharge your week, it's Wattage Wednesday!
Continuing our series exploring next generation reactors, today we examine the SMR-300.
The SMR-300 is a 300 megawatt small modular reactor being developed by nuclear technology company Holtec International. In 2014, Holtec began work on this next generation light water reactor design with the goal of providing economical, reliable, and inherently safe nuclear power.
Unlike a traditional nuclear reactor, this SMR takes up 3 hectares (7.41 acres) of land for a single unit deployment. This is a fraction of the land area required by other types of power plants on a per megawatt basis. No emergency planning zone is required outside the fence-line, as is typically necessary for larger reactors.
These SMRs also have an amazing life span. At a minimum, the service life of SMR-300 is 80 years. With proper proactive maintenance, a 100-year service life should be achievable.
Holtec designed the SMR-300 to help fulfill the company's mission of pro...
