A slim majority of Iowans oppose allowing health care workers to opt out of providing services if they go against their personal or religious beliefs, a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll finds. A bill introduced in the Iowa Senate this session would have allowed health care practitioners, institutions and insurers to exercise “a right of conscience” and opt out of providing services, procedures or other care inconsistent with their “ethical, moral, or religious beliefs or principles.” The bill did not come up for floor debate in the Senate by Friday, missing a legislative deadline to move forward. However, it’s possible that House or Senate leaders could revive the bill before the session ends this spring.
