#Kelis admitted at the start of her career, she was naive about the ways in which the music industry would try to change her and her image. "I had no idea that there'd be board meetings about my weight or my hair or how Black or not Black I was."⁠ ⁠ She thinks her innocence to the realities of the industry allowed her to operate as her most authentic self, and remembers being "young and rife with ideas and bursting with energy and creativity and like, you couldn't stop me if you tried."
