The city of Portland is unlikely to install detoxification beds where residents could safely manage their withdrawal from alcohol or drugs at its mass tiny home shelter site in the Central Eastside. Officials floated the idea of adding detox beds during conversations regarding the 90-day fentanyl emergency, which Gov. Tina Kotek, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler declared at the end of January. The emergency was declared to align state, county and city responses to the public health crisis to prioritize resources. During the 90-day stretch, leaders said they would work to expand access to addiction treatment and other support services, reduce fatal overdoses and increase police action.
