Seattle Sounders’ Alex Roldán has abruptly announced his retirement from the El Salvador national team today because he is “disappointed” with their federation. 🇸🇻
Roldán, brother of USMNT’s Cristián Roldán, was born and raised in the U.S. to Guatemalan father and Salvadoran mother. He decided to represent El Salvador in 2021.
“It’s a tough decision to make but it’s best that I allow someone else to have an opportunity,” Roldán said to reporters after training with Sounders.
“I wasn’t fully commited and I was also just disappointed with the way things are operated over there.”
He didn’t want to go into details about what exactly he was disappointed with.
Roldán was one of several U.S. born players recruited by Hugo Pérez, former USMNT player who was coaching El Salvador.
Pérez was sacked in September after disappointing results, and El Salvador brought in a whole new coaching staff from Spain.
