Our favorite girl-power anthem ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐โ๐ ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ด๐ is taking the world by storm โจ
Released in 1963, Lesley Goreโs song is her first to stray away from the style of music she was used to writing about โconcerned boys,โ as told by
@NPR.
In an interview on
@whyyโs Fresh Air in 1991, Gore recalled when โYou Donโt Own Meโ first came to her attention. โAt the time, I know I chose it because I know I liked the strength in the lyric,โ she told host Terry Gross. โBut, for me, it was not a song about being a woman. It was about being a person, and what was involved with that. Of course, it got picked up as an anthem for women, which makes me very proud.โ
