And so it begins. For the First Round of the Open Cup, we ventured down to Chattanooga, TN, among the mountains, bricks, and exposed steel. Years ago, Don Garber fired a cheap shot saying no one would want to go watch a soccer game in Chattanooga of all places. The people in the stands haven’t forgotten, and they’ve proved him wrong. Take Topher, for example. He’s been the team’s “flag czar” for eight years, proudly waving his enormous hand-made flag from the very top of the stadium, every single game. Or take Ellie. Their 20-something-year-old capo who fell in love with the game just two years ago. Or the young kids wearing cowboy boots and juggling in the concourse. The magic of the cup lives on through fans like them. Different generations converging for the only soccer competition that treats us as equal.
