Did you get suspicious emails offering a pet-sitting job? Don't fall for it! Cal State LA students recently received suspicious emails with job offers asking for contact information (phone number, email, home address). If you provided your information to the scammers, you are not at risk for identity theft, but you are at risk for financial loss.
Here is how the scam works: Once scammers gather contact information, they send “pet-sitters” (scam victims) a fraudulent check in the mail with a large amount of money. They instruct their pet sitters to deposit the check into their own account and purchase pet supplies. After purchasing supplies, scammers ask pet sitters for the leftover money. Banks can make the check amount quickly available, but they can take weeks to process before discovering it is a counterfeit. This leaves "pet-sitters" with financial losses from their own accounts.
