“No revolutionary movement is complete without its poetical expression.” That was a rallying cry for the Green Mountain Bhoys ahead of yesterday. Their first-ever Open Cup game. And what sweet poetry it was. Flares, scarves, banners, and a frenzied crowd bore witness to one of the most extraordinary nights in Open Cup history. The Montreal Brigade came down, and even Bernie Sanders got caught up in the hype. And how can you not? This fervent Vermont community has turned their corner of the country into one of the most special soccer destinations in North America. Many first-team players weren’t even released by their colleges to play last night, and the team still scored three goals in the opening 25 minutes to pull off the upset over Lexington. Only a handful of grounds have enough mystical aura to make that happen. Seeing 2800 Vermonters will their way to victory was something no one in attendance will soon forget.
