If you’re raising a bilingual child and are struggling to be bilingual yourself, this post is for you.
The one language I can speak besides English is Arabic. It took *years* of learning and living in an Arabic speaking country to become even somewhat proficient in it. Learning a language as an adult is *hard.*
When we had kids, we knew we wanted to raise them to speak German, since half of their family is in Germany. Finnley has understood German for a while but he hasn’t spoken it…until now. In the two months we’ve been in Germany, he’s gone from saying a few German words to fluently speaking.
And here’s where I am: there are many, many moments when I am struggling to keep up. Am I a bit jealous of his German? Do I have to say “Finnley, remind me what that means in English?” about a hundred times? Yep.
Kids are incredible, ya’ll. And if you’re in a similar situation as I am, I’ll pour you some coffee, open Duolingo and hope we can just keep up.
