“Parenting like a German.” When Thorben and I had Finnley, we quickly realized that American and German parenting styles are not one and the same.
No where was this more evident than on the playground. I’ll never forget the first time I was at a playground in Berlin and finally noticed what was so different — the parents were all sitting on benches, chatting to one another, laid-back and smiling. I was the only parent hovering over my child.
Here’s some other traits I love that I’ve learned are trademarks of German parenting:
- Encouraging freedom and independence
- Play comes first
- Outdoor play all the time, rain or shine
No parenting style is perfect and there certainly needs to be a balance but we’re learning that cross-cultural parenting is an opportunity to meld what you both love together.
And I guess I’ll report back in a couple of decades on whether or not it actually worked!
