Malaria is a preventable and curable, yet life-threatening, disease spread by some mosquitoes. Researchers around the world, including at YSPH, are studying ways to better prevent, diagnose, and treat malaria. And to advocate for the use of, and investment in, tools we already have to prevent illness and death, especially in the hardest hit parts of the world. There has been recent good news on the malaria vaccine front as well! In late 2021, WHO recommended broad use of a malaria vaccine among children in regions with moderate to high transmission. The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce malaria illness and death among young children. And just this month, Ghana and Nigeria approved another malaria vaccine, although WHO is still assessing this second vaccine.
