Almost all cervical cancer is caused by HPV. The good news: it’s preventable. Here are a few ways to reduce your risk of cervical cancer: 1️⃣ Get vaccinated. Yes, there’s a vaccine that can help prevent cancer! The HPV vaccine is recommended by the CDC for 11-12 year-olds of all genders, but can be given starting at age 9. It’s also recommended for everyone through age 26 if you haven’t been vaccinated already. 2️⃣ Get tested. Both Pap smears and HPV tests can help find changes that could become precancer or cancer. Talk to your healthcare provider about how often you should get screened. 3️⃣ HPV is a sexually transmitted infection (and the most common one in the U.S. at that). Of course, the best way to avoid an STI is to not have sex. If you’re having vaginal, anal, or oral sex, use condoms and/or dental dams. Every time.
