History is freaking cool. Here’s a little history lesson for you: Did you know in the 1850s a devastating cholera outbreak killed hundreds of people in the Soho area of London? Some subdivisions saw a nearly 13% death rate. John Snow, now a public health icon, mapped out where cases were occurring. He was then able to trace the cases to the Broad Street water pump. Although it was not commonly believed that cholera was spread through contaminated water at the time (now we know it indeed is), John Snow was able to convince stakeholders to turn off the Broad Street Pump. The removal of the pump handle saved countless lives. It changed the way we see diseases, and how they spread, today: not just as individual cases, but as part of a larger story about where and how we live. Disclaimer: this is a trend. Lizzo doesn’t actually have the Broad Street Pump handle. But history is stilll freaking cool and so is public health.
