We have seen over and over again how vaccinations save lives. A new study by Yale School of Public Health and Commonwealth Fund experts estimates that increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates in Florida and Texas could have saved an additional 4,700 lives through July. If the two states had similar vaccination rates to states like Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, more than 460,000 COVID-19 cases could have been averted since December, as well as over 70,000 hospitalizations. “The success of COVID-19 vaccination campaigns in many states demonstrates the real-world feasibility, and impact, of achieving high vaccination coverage,” the authors, including YSPH’s Pratha Sah and Alison Galvani, write. “The highly infectious Delta variant, which is driving the current surge, makes the situation even more dire,” they add.
