Today in US Open Cup history (May 5, 1917): In a rematch of last year's Final (also at Coates Field in Pawtucket, RI), Fall River Rovers edged Bethlehem Steel 1-0 to win their first National Challenge Cup title & deny the Steelmen a three-peat. Tommy Swords, who captained the first two matches in #USMNT history and would be a future SoccerHOF inductee, scored the lone goal of the match in the first minute. Bethlehem Steel would win the next two tournaments (including beating the Rovers again in 1918), so it's possible that without Tommy Swords and the Rovers defense, the Steelmen could have won five trophies in a row. #soccer #soccerhistory fallrivermarksmenfc #ussoccer #usopencup #USOC2020 #OnThisDay #OTD #FallRiverMass mass.soccer
