At age 6, Ruby Bridges was the first African American to integrate an elementary school in the American South. Following the Brown v. Board of Education supreme court case, schools were allowed to be integrated in the United States. Many southern states resisted, including Ruby’s home state of Louisiana. Bridges was escorted to school by federal marshals daily as people stood outside bashing her with slurs for obtaining the education she deserved. #UnitedinGOLD charlotte49ers conferenceusa
