Old Town, generally known as an upscale neighborhood, is an odd microcosm of the city’s long history of racial segregation converging with exponential gentrification. Just a couple blocks from bustling Wells Street, a short stretch of Sedgwick Street between North and Division acts as the divide between two different worlds. The eastern side of the street holds luxury housing and apartments with average rent upwards of $3,000 a month. To the west are the Marshall Field Garden Apartments, a subsidized housing project that was built in 1929. As pressures from opposing sides mount, one to continue renovating the neighborhood and the other to protect residents who have lived here for generations, a small art studio called Art on Sedgwick tries to remind people that everyone in the neighborhood matters. . 📷: Aaron Somo lilsomo23 for #jour276 #photojournalism taken #beforecorona . #chicago #oldtown #art #artprogram #artonsedgwick #gentrification
