This May, WPI Athletics is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by asking each of our coaches to pick a legendary or favorite Asian American in their sport. We conclude with Ichiro Suzuki, a future Baseball Hall of Famer and the all-time leader in base hits in professional baseball. In 2001, Suzuki became the first Japanese-born position player to be posted and signed to an MLB club. He immediately made his presence felt, winning both the Rookie of the Year and the MVP after leading the American League in batting average and stolen bases. He would go on to earn 10 Golden Gloves, 10 All-Star selections, 2 batting titles and 3 Silver Sluggers in the Major Leagues, while also setting an MLB record with 262 hits in the 2004 season. #aapi #APAEverywhere #APAHM
