While the official release of the Cartier Baignoire occurred in 1957, the first unofficial Baignoire was created in 1912 when Louis Cartier took the traditional round watch shape and stretched it, creating two parallel lines enclosed by curves. Our example in the upcoming Important Watches sale at #SothebysNewYork is a medium-sized model of the Baignoire Paris dating to the 1960s with a provenance fit for the silver screen. Charlie Chaplin—famous for such films as The Kid and City Lights—gifted the watch to his wife, Oona Chaplin, and it quickly became a favorite of hers. Accompanied by a signed letter from the couple’s daughter-in-law Bernadette Chaplin confirming that it was indeed a gift from Charlie to Oona, we are pleased to offer this lot in overall very good condition. Discover this and more highlights from the 7 December auction, presented in partnership with @genesishousenyc, in our link in bio. #SothebysWatches #CharlieChaplin #Cartier
