To quote a Rolex advertisement, ‘Men Who Guide the Destinies of the World Wear Rolex Watches.’ That statement was likely never truer than with the Rolex Day-Date, often referred to as ‘The President.'
Perhaps the most exclusive metal to ever be offered in the Day-Date is also the most understated: platinum. To the untrained eye, it would be easy to mistake it for steel, or perhaps even white gold. The subtle distinction here is in the smooth bezel, which to this day remains an option offered only on platinum Day-Date references. This piece is also fitted with a stunning—and very rare—Onyx dial. The hallmarks of an Onyx dial made for a platinum Day-Date are the silver printing, and matching silver aperture frames. Prone to cracking and chipping, these stone dials were notoriously hard to work with, which makes our example's flawless condition and excellent depth of color a collector's dream.
