Like much of the work from Ulysse Nardin, the Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon debuted at Baselworld 2016 took heavy inspiration from the world of maritime, though this is the first time that the tourbillon complication was introduced to the Marine case collection. A key element of this undeniably impressive timepiece is the blued aluminum retrograde minute hand that mimics a ship’s boom, controlled by a system of transparent string made of a polyethylene and pulleys. Known as Dyneema fiber, the string being thinner than a human hair, is stronger than steel and pulls the minute hand across the dial displaying minute indications along a blue spinel arc. In addition to the retrograde minute and jumping hour mechanisms, the in-house calibre also features a 60-minute flying tourbillon nestled within the beautifully intricate wooden marquetry dial, resembling the deck of a ship.
