#AuctionUpdate Gérald Genta’s original design for PatekPhilippe Nautilus soared to HK$5.67m/ US$723k at Sotheby’s yesterday (starting bid was HK$800/ US$100). The hand-painted design, vied for 10 bidders, led the second iteration of Gérald Genta: Icon of Time auction in Hong Kong.
Set apart in the pantheon of great horologists, “the Picasso of watchmaking”, Gérald Genta (1931-2011), transformed the future of the watch industry with his visionary designs. Earlier this year Sotheby’s has launched a multi-location auction series to celebrate the achievement of Genta, starting in Geneva in February where the original design for Audemars Piguet Royal Oak realiased US$610,586. Coming up next would be the May Important Watches sale in Geneva, starring Genta’s unique Royal Oak and four oil paintings of his, before the final online sale taking place in June, New York.
