AUCTION RECORD: This 'Rainbow Khanjar' Day-Date, ref. 18059 White gold, diamond and sapphire-set wristwatch (circa 1984) broke records yesterday when it achieved £983,000 at auction, almost 4x its pre-sale estimate of £150,000 - £250,000, and the highest price realised for a Day-date at auction.
Omani Signed Rolexes have in the last few years become a favorite for collectors. The watches, signed with a khanjar, the national symbol of Oman, were initially commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, through the Bond street dealer of Rolex, Asprey.
This piece was one of 5 produced as special order for Sultan Qaboos in 1984 by Ramdas. Presented in 18k white gold, with a pavé diamond dial and rainbow set, coloured sapphires around the bezel with matching hour indexes. Of the 3 known, this is the first to be publicly offered for sale at auction and was amazingly offered in new old stock condition - having been previously stored in a safe and never worn.
