Beginning production in 2005, the PatekPhilippe reference 3712 featured the familiar Jumbo case, but added an unusual asymmetric dial layout with an offset moon phase and power reserve indicator. Powering the watch was the 240 base caliber, the first time a micro-rotor movement was ever used in a Nautilus. As a result, the watch was remarkably thin. Reference 3712 was discontinued after only 1 year to make room for the very similar 5712 launched in 2006 for the anniversary collection of the Nautilus, making it one of the shortest production runs of any Patek Philippe reference, and coveted by collectors for its extreme scarcity. Reference 3712 can be told apart from the 5712 by the presence of the 7 o’clock hour marker. If 7 o’clock is indicated by a metal lume plot, then it is a 3712.
