From 1980s breakdance to ancient Egypt, Keith Haring channeled his influences into a Pop Art that created his own brand of spiritualism. His Totem (Concrete) from 1989, along with other classic works in our upcoming #PhillipsEditions Sale, take their place here among Haring’s television appearances of the 1980s. A totem, or doodem, is a spirit being, a sacred object that serves as an emblem of people. Jumping and reaching towards the sun, the two figures at the top of Totem are living, striving for that which we all chase. Reflective of Haring’s own history, challenging societal norms, Totem captures the vitality of life but reminds us of its impermanence.
