In late 19th-century Germany, heightened prosperity under Kaiser Wilhelm II fuelled demand for more and more decorative pocket watches.
A. Lange & Söhne, who had pioneered the country’s watchmaking industry from the ground up in Glashütte, responded by producing increasingly lavish pieces.
This hunting cased keyless lever watch in pink gold features a stunning case engraved with a portrait of Minerva by Professor Carl Ludwig Theodor Graff, who worked on some of the most elaborate watches produced by the firm.
The piece is a highlight of this evening’s Masterworks of Time auction in
#geneva, with an estimate of CHF 15,000 - 25,000.
