Exploring historical references and her own personal experiences, Tschabalala Self's iconographic practice examines the importance of the black female body in contemporary culture. Confronting historic representations of gender head-on, Self's 2015 work 'Lilith' presents an exaggerated depiction of the female form and belongs to a body of work that echoes the artist's own experiences with race, gender and sexuality. Assembled from pieces of fabric, discarded paintings and found materials to convey a fantastical, otherworldly composition, 'Lilith' is on view through 7 March and 30 Berkeley Square ahead of our 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale.
