#AiWeiwei's 'Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, 2010', is one of the artist's most widely exhibited and collected works. Based on a group of sculptures that originally encircled the fountain-clock of the Old Summer Palace complex outside Beijing, they were looted in 1860 by British and French soldiers, under the Earl of Elgin — the son of the man who removed the "Elgin marbles" from Greece. Chinese collectors have recovered 7 of the animal heads, but 5 remain missing (dragon, dog, snake, sheep and rooster). Ai Weiwei has replicated the 7 known heads and imagined what the missing 5 would look like, thus recreating the stolen national treasure. Cast in gilded bronze on the artist’s huanghuali wood bases, the piece must be seen to be believed.
