#GuestPost #RoyLichtenstein (1923-1997), Landscape with Grass, 1996 (detail). Cover lot to be offered tomorrow at Phillips inaugural contemporary sale in Hong Kong.
Roy Lichtenstein returned to painting landscapes in 1995, Landscapes in the Chinese Style is one of his last powerful series, which comprised of only around 23 paintings, and 2 sculptures, as well as numerous studies in drawings, sketches and collages. Degas' monotype and pastel landscape works, shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1994, were the instant inspiration for the series. However, Roy's interest in Chinese classical art can be traced back to the 1940s when he was a student at Ohio State University. Roy employed his signature dots and remarkably rendered light and shadow, space and perspective in those works, referencing the highly stylized scenes of Song dynasty landscape paintings.
